Muskie Alumni spreading American Experience in the South Region of Moldova |

 On September 30, 2011 Ludmila Balteanu, Muskie alumna 2008, shared her American experience with 10 members of NGO “Biaz Ghiuli” , who are establishing the Social Support Center for PLWH (people living with HIV) in Comrat, Moldova. The main topic of discussion was the organization of social support for HIV treatment adherence with participation of faith based organizations and volunteers from community. Dr. Balteanu shared results of her graduation project on using social support to improve HIV treatment adherence in Moldova and talked about evidence based interventions to improve treatment adherence and measure results such as perceived social support and quality of life. “Biaz-Ghiuli” members and social workers, who provide support and act like case managers for PLHW (people living with HIV) in Comrat, showed particular interest toward the experience of cooperation of NGO and health system and type of intervention to support HIV treatment adherence of PLWH. Alumna shared her experience with faith based NGO running multiple projects for HIV infected people. Participants at the discussion were particularly content with information on case management, advocacy for PLWH from perspective of client centeredness, respect of human rights, and confidentiality. The encounter and shared information on Dr Balteanus’ internship and Master of Science in Public Health training experience during her stay in USA was perceived positively and participants expressed interest for future collaboration to connect local health care and academic system with NGO and other local initiative for support of PLHW.
