2005 ECA Alumni Small Grants Program

Citizens of Moldova Benefit from a Participation Center in Their Own Neighborhood

With more than 800 letters of interest submitted from citizens throughout Moldova, IREX has partnered with local NGOS in Balti, Causeni, Comrat, Orhei, Soroca and Ungheni to provide branch offices for the IREX Citizen Participation Program (CPP) and IREX regional trainers and coordinators. Each of the six regional hubs outside of Chisinau will implement CPP activities on a local scale, offering training, mentoring, and funding to assist citizen initiative groups and nongovernmental organizations in carrying out projects conceived and developed by and for citizens.

Sponsored by the US Government through the Agency for International Development (USAID) and administered by the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX), the Moldova Citizen Participation Program (CPP) is a five-year program to assist citizens in using democratic process and individual initiative to improve living and social conditions in over 200 communities throughout Moldova . The CPP also promotes social partnerships between citizens, mass media and community representatives who are committed to tackling and solving local social, cultural and economic challenges.

Through its six regional centers in Balti, Causeni, Comrat, Orhei, Soroca and Ungheni, the CPP will encourage, support and provide technical assistance to active citizens and groups throughout Moldova . Launched in November 2004, the CPP compliments other U.S. Government-sponsored programs implemented in Moldova by IREX, including the Internet Access and Training Program (IATP) and educational exchange and alumni programs, and continues IREX-Chisinau's eight-year history of commitment to the people of Moldova .
